New Places and New faces

I have moved placements from the school in the massai land to an orphanage called progressive not far from down town Nairobi. The founder and mother of the orphanage is named Sally. She has an amazing story of hard work and determination. She states often that you do what you can with what you have. Improvisation is one of the most important things I am learning here and what Sally is trying to instill into the children at the orphanage.
Here are some pictures of the orphanage.
The children have created some beautiful pieces of art that they are hoping to sell to raise money for the orphanage. Sally is always looking for volunteers who can teach the kids any skill or art. So today I brought my loom and began to weave while the children were taking examinations planning on creating something to show them that they could make. During their first break the children crowded around me, filling the kitchen, lining up, and jostling for who got to weave
the next row. It was very rewarding to see the smiles and joy something so simple can bring to these children.
View of the city from the back of the orphanage. Sally wants to get a cow so that the children have milk.
This is a river that flows behind the orphanage. The children must walk down to it and carry up buckets of water, for hand and clothes washing, flushing the toilet, etc. You can imagine that it is a pretty long trek fo little arms with a ful bucket of water.
These girls are playing a game with plastic cups from the trash and a "ball." the ball is homemade with great innovation. It is dirt packed into a plastic bag and then wound tightly! Very cool.
